Pulmonology
A pulmonologist diagnoses and treats diseases of the respiratory system — the lungs and other organs that help you breathe. From the windpipe to the lungs, if your complaint involves the lungs or any part of the respiratory system, a pulmonologist is the specialist you want to solve the problem.
A pulmonologist can treat many kinds of respiratory issues. These include:
- Asthma, a disease that inflames and narrows your airways and makes it hard to breathe
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Cystic fibrosis, a disease that makes sticky mucus build up in your lungs
- Bronchitis and Pneumonia
- Emphysema, which damages the air sacs in your lungs
- Interstitial lung disease, a group of conditions that scar and stiffen your lungs
- Lung cancer
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Pulmonary hypertension, or high blood pressure in the arteries of your lungs
- Tuberculosis, a bacterial infection of the lungs
- Bronchiectasis, which damages your airways so they widen and become flabby or scarred
